What is an 'L E D Light'?

The L E D stands for Light Emitting Diode. A light-emitting diode is a small semiconductor device. It emits photons of light when electric current flows through it. LEDs are the light source inside the lamps you can buy from our online lighting store.

LED lights have many advantages over other lighting technologies, including:

  • Higher energy efficiency ('lumens per watt'),
  • Much longer lifetime,
  • Switch on instantly at full brightness,
  • Precise control and dimmable options available,
  • Compact size, cooler operating temperature (reduced fire risk), and more.

LED lights are better than incandescent, halogen, fluorescent or HID lamps in almost every application.

What to Check When Buying an LED Light

Buying the right LED light can be a little overwhelming at first. But if you follow this short guide, you'll be on your way to getting the best lighting for your home or business.

1) Lighting Wattage & Brightness

In the old days, you could buy a '60 Watt' bulb from the lighting shop, and that was that. Things aren't so simple anymore because LED lights are advancing so quickly. In other words: the wattage of a light bulb or fitting is no longer an indicative guide to its brightness. So be sure to look out for the "equivalent wattage" or the actual light output (specified in lumens).

2) Light Bulb Shape & Base

Light Bulb TypesNo one wants to find out the light globe they bought is the wrong one and doesn't fit. Thankfully, all light bulbs have a code that describes their base and shape. So look out for names like MR16, E27, B22, T8, or PAR38 on your existing light bulbs. Or, check the spares cupboard, and you'll be most of the way to buying the correct product.

3) Lighting Colour Temperature

Many people come unstuck here, but again it's pretty simple once you understand the jargon. In summary, there are:

Common Names Colour Temperature Codes
Warm Glow or Candle Light 2200K, 2500K
Warm White, Bright Warm, or Soft White 2700K, 3000K, 3500K
Natural / Neutral White, Daylight, or Pure / Cool White 4000K, 5000K, 6500K

The terms are often mixed up, even by the same manufacturer! So don't get led astray when one company's 'cool white' is another's 'daylight'.

The safest thing to do is to look for the actual colour code (XXXXK). We specify this code on all our LED lighting product pages.

4) Dimmable Lights

If your lights use a dimmer, make sure you choose an LED that is 'dimmable.' These lights will typically work on your existing dimmers. In some cases, you may need to upgrade to an LED dimmer.
