Course in Home Sustainability Assessment (code: 21854VIC)
The 21854VIC course provides participants with an entry level education in sustainability. The course leads to a Certificate of Attainment and is delivered at a Cert II level. While this course is orientated around ‘home’ assessment, the knowledge gained can be applied in different contexts, such as in businesses.
The training is delivered over 14 sessions and covers these topics:
- Introduction to sustainability
- Home sustainability assessments
- Energy
- Water
- Waste and recycling
- The garden and environs
- Lifestyle choices
- Workplace safety
- Delivering a service to customers

Understanding Your ‘Eco Footprint’ (Next: TBA)
This session covers the basic principles of sustainability. It includes discussion of key concepts such as Ecological Sustainable Development, greenhouse gases, the cost of climate change, peak resources and the Earth’s bio-capacity.

Household Water Consumption and Efficiency (Next: 6 Mar 2012)
This includes the basics of water usage in Australian homes, our sources of water, and reading household bills and meters. A range of water efficiency options are discussed including rainwater tanks, appliances, behaviour changes and considerations of safe greywater reuse.

Building a Sustainable House (Next: 21 Mar 2012)
Building a new home or renovating are one of the highest ‘impact’ and costliest activities that we undertake. In this session Ian Moxon takes participants through the steps he took in designing and building his fully off-grid Sustainable House.

How are the course and workshop sessions delivered?
Steplight’s online training is delivered through an interactive ‘virtual classroom’ where you can watch and listen to the presentations, talk with the presenter and to fellow participants. You can also contribute to class activities through text messages and by drawing or writing on the shared electronic whiteboard.
You will need a computer with broadband access and a set of headphones with microphone to participate fully (if your headphones don’t have a microphone you can still contribute via the text box and on whiteboard).

The Certificate IV in Home Sustainability Assessment is more in-depth than the courses described above. Steplight is currently working to have this course available in 2012.
The CPP41110 Certificate IV in Home Sustainability Assessment comprises twelve units – 8 core and 4 electives and requires 150 hours total commitment.
