Measure Temperature Without Making Direct Contact

Take measurements with the push of a button using this temperature gun. The Protech non-contact thermometer has an infrared (IR) sensor with laser to read surface temperatures quickly and easily.

Its non-contact operation is perfect for checking hard to reach areas, high temperatures, food, and more. It features:

  • Wide temperature range of -50°C to 500°C
  • Fast temperature measurement of 0.5 seconds
  • Laser pointer to take measurements of precise areas
  • LCD screen with backlight

You'll find many uses for this infrared thermometer once it's in your toolbox. Check for overheating electrical components, HVAC (Heating, Cooling & Ventilation) issues, refrigeration performance, or temperatures of automotive parts. We've even used them to take measurements of our energy-efficient cookers.

Protech Infrared Temperature Gun - Tips & Tricks

The Protech non-contact thermometer is simple to use. With these few tips, you can take measurements as accurately as possible.

1) How to check 'spot size' when taking infrared thermometer readings.

As you move away from the object you're measuring, the IR sensor will capture an increasingly larger area. The 'measurement distance to spot size ratio' of this non-contact thermometer is 12:1. For example:

  • If you measure a surface 36 cm away, the spot size will be 3 cm in diameter.
  • At a 12 metre distance, the spot size will be 1 metre in diameter.

TIP: For best results, ensure the area you are measuring is at least twice the area of your spot size. Bring the temperature gun closer to your target if needed to check a specific area. The laser pointer makes it easy to know what you're pointing at.

2) Understanding 'emissivity' and how non-contact thermometers work.

Emissivity (ε) is a value corresponding to how effective a material's surface is at emitting energy as thermal radiation. The Protech temp gun senses this infrared radiation and is preset with an emissivity value of 0.95.

Many materials like rubber, various plastics, wood, food, human skin, dry soil, and water all have emissivity values close to 0.95. Items like these can be measured quite accurately.

Shiny metals with reflective surfaces have much lower thermal emissivity values. For example, aluminium foil has a value of 0.04, new galvanised steel is 0.23, and stainless steel is 0.74. To improve accuracy on these surfaces, cover a small section in electrical tape, white-out or even a piece of paper. They all have emissivity close to 0.95 and are easy to remove once you've finished taking measurements.

3) How to maximise temperature gun accuracy.

Surface temperature measurements are less accurate if taken at an angle. Point the Protech infrared thermometer directly at the surface, so the lens is parallel to the target. Don't forget the sensor detects temperatures at the surface, not internal temperatures.

As long as you can see the item and highlight it with the laser pointer, you can measure it!

Not just a thermometer

Good draught detector as well! Also been great to see whether there are gaps in insulation
